I would have thought they would have asked you to adjust the cable out, toward the firewall, rather than in, toward the radiator. Do a search on 700R4 TV cable adjustment and you will see for yourself on how the TV valve works. Can you take a pic of the valve body with the cable connected and with the cable disconnected. Driving it the way it is will hurt it and there may be nothing wrong. 1st gear is a very low ratio and with light throttle pressure it will shift quickly into 2nd. With more throttle it should stay in first longer and at WOT shift later and hard enough to chirp the tires.Briscoe from the Hotrodders.com board tells me that the trans should operate at 65-70PSI at idle, and if putting a gauge on pressure tap port yields over 90PSI at idle, then that most likely indicates a stuck TV valve (common 700R4 problem).
